2.1. Design Problem Definition
After having grasped the sense of the assignments for the second week, I got clear that my project for the 1st week (1.4) is unfit for my further work since it's too narrow and specific.
So, I shift my choice to a new (unrelated) gap: I need a piece of multifunctional handbag, and since I mainly move on foot or by public transit (and also frequently travel by plane), my 5 whys result from the need to have all my personal stuff in one ‘bundle’, i.e. not to carry a purse and a couple of plastic totes/bags in order to cover some other needs at the same time:

In what way might I...
- travel more comfortably when walking/commuting
- avoid carrying 2-3 items to accommodate all the stuff I need
- have everything I need in one ‘bundle’
- not having to worry about misplacing or forgetting/losing things
- *create a practical multipurpose bag
- make less effort when passing security check at airport
2.2. Users Needs
I want to have all my personal stuff in one ‘bundle’ (not to carry a purse and a couple of plastic totes/bags at the same time in order to cover some other needs) and a multipurpose tote-bag is a good solution for that since it covers all my requirements:
1. The tote-bag serves my needs wherever I go (go to week 3) - 2. holds flat items like canvases (up to 30x40 cm - 12”x16”) - 3. can be easily mounted/fixed on a cart - 4. serves for everyday grocery shopping - 5. complies with airline carry-on restrictions - 6. can be easily mounted/fixed on a bike 7. The tote-bag holds my personal stuff usually carried in purse - 8. wallet/passport - 9. mobile phone with charger - 10. laptop/tablet - 11. keys - 12. glasses/sunglasses - 13. makeup case - 14. bottle of water - 15. rain-poncho - 16. ! small collapsible umbrella even when wet - 17. mp3 with cord - 18. small camera - 19. (paper) notebook | 20. The tote-bag is comfortably portable - 21. in hand - 22. on the shoulder - 23. as a backpack - 24. ! stays on the shoulder (doesn't fall off) - 25. is lightweight when empty 26. The tote-bag is convenient to arrange items in it - 27. items in the tote-bag are easily accessible - 28. items in the tote-bag are easy to locate - 29. ! closes and opens easily with one hand (go to week 3) - 30. its straps, when not in use, are stored in it and easily found 31. The tote-bag is appealing from the aesthetics aspect - 32. 'turns heads' - 33. is stylish - 34. its colour matches most of my clothes |
...and here are some other I couldn't categorize:
The tote-bag keeps my stuff dry in the rain
The tote-bag is affordable
The tote-bag can be easily cleaned
