Assignment 1.4. Design for me
My gap - Improvement and alteration (re-design) of my chair so it becomes more comfortable
The reasons why I chose this gap:
I have no better chair and the one I have is too high and my legs aren't completely flat on the floor, so after sitting a while in it I feel tension in my knees, and have to put a pillow or some other support under my legs. (solution: cut the chair legs for about 4 cm). It seems that most of the standard chairs are made for men, since it's a pretty common problem for women who are about 160-165 cm tall.
All in all, the chair has firm and solid metal construction but its upholstery is quite worn and needs to be replaced.
The seat slopes forward which also burdens the legs and the lower back. (solution: when making a new upholstery put a foam or similar padding which is gradually thicker toward the seat's front side so the knees are slightly elevated)
Also, the seat is too deep. (solution: padding so the chair back gets thicker)
The arm rests are at the right height, but too narrow so my elbows slip down frequently which causes frustration. (solution: widening of the armrests.)
I love to alter, improve/renovate old things and especially pieces of furniture, and being experienced in sewing and making upholstery, I think I am capable to perform this task from A-Z.
And although I have the whole picture of my final 'product', it's pretty difficult at this very moment to make its prototype. The dilemma is: if I make the prototype it will almost take as much time as for the chair re-design. So I decided to proceed with renovation.
(By the way, it just happened yesterday - Saturday - that I literally ran into a piece of gorgeous fabric at a really bargain price: 1.20 Canadian dollar per metre!!! - photo #3).

So, I dismantled the chair and...
